Four dead in just three days, says MEC
Patricia de Lille, the MEC for Social Development in the Western Cape says at least four people have lost their lives in fires since Thursday, 28 April.
"This morning 11 shacks in Olieboom Road in Schaapkraal were destroyed by fire, leaving 35 people displaced, including five children," MEC De Lille says.
"I have instructed departmental officials to dispatch baby packs, brunches and blankets where necessary. Of course, trauma counselling will be offered to all survivors.
"For those that have lost loved ones and/or all their possessions, trauma counselling is crucial. Anyone wanting to receive trauma counselling can call 0800 220 250 for further information," says the MEC.
The four deceased include three people in a Kraaifontein shack when it was destroyed by fire yesterday, 29 April and another person that died in a one-shack fire in Greenpoint, Khayelitsha.
"Our condolences go to all those that have lost loved ones in these devastating fires – our thoughts and prayers are with you," MEC De Lille says.
In a second fire today in Brown's Farm, Philippi, which affected one shack, another four Capetonians were displaced.
