The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Norman Mokoena has gazetted the names of 76 traditional leaders who will participate in proceedings of municipal councils.
These traditional leaders were identified in consultation with the Mpumalanga House of Traditional Leaders and they will participate in the proceedings of municipal councils in terms of section 81(2) of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act No.117 of 1988).
Only those municipalities with traditional leaders falling within their areas jurisdiction have been affected. Those municipal councils affected will have their number of council seats being increased to accommodate these changes.
The traditional leaders whose names have been gazetted are expected to start participating in the municipal councils as from 1 July 2010.
MEC Mokoena has expressed his appreciation with the cooperation that has been given by the House of Traditional Leaders and South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Mpumalanga, in dealing with this matter.
"This matter has been outstanding for a while, which affected the functioning of our municipal councils and traditional councils on matters of bringing development to some areas especially rural areas. The participation of traditional leaders in municipal councils will strengthen our system of governance," said Mokoena.
