North West MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Nono Maloyi has called upon the South African Police Service (SAPS) to speedily investigate and establish the cause of a fire incident at the Lichtenburg museum and town hall buildings last night which caused extensive damages.
The museum building was completely gutted while the attached townhall building suffered partial damages. The area has been cordoned off to allow the forensic investigators to do their work. It is alleged that the fire broke out at around 19h00 last night. Fire and emergency services rushed to the scene and managed to distinguish the blazing fire. No injuries were reported.
MEC Maloyi expressed his concern at the incident and has called for a speedy investigation into the cause of fire. “We are very much concerned about the damages to public property and I’ll like to call upon the police to speed up their investigation and leave no stone unturned in establishing what sparked the fire.
“I also want to urge the community of Lichtenburg and Ditsobotla in general, to work with the police and come forward with any information that might assist in the investigation”, remarked MEC Maloyi.
He said the incident takes place at the time when the provincial government is hard at work making interventions that are aimed at turning around the municipality.
