MEC Nkosiphendule Kolisile engaging with stakeholders in the mining sector

The MEC for Economic Development, Nkosiphendule Kolisile, notes with concern the on-going turbulence in the mining sector in Gauteng. Among some of the mines experiencing the unrest are the Gold Fields'Kloof and Driefontein mines in the West Rand as well as Gold One International in Modder East, Ekurhuleni.

The Department of Economic Development recognises the conditions of working the mining sector as well as the persisting challenges of inequality, poverty and unemployment in our province. The MEC appeals to all the stakeholders, particularly mining houses and workers' representatives, to engage in dialogue and negotiations in order to reach speedy resolution to the issues at hand.

The Gauteng Department of Economic Development will, consistent with national processes, continue its consultations with all stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the challenges confronting the mining sector in the province. The Department also reaffirms its commitment to promote inclusive economic growth and decent jobs in the province.
