MEC Nkosiphendule Kolisile concerned about incidents of violent crime in the Muldersdrift area

The Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED) notes with concern the increase in murders and violent crime in the Muldersdrift area.

The Muldersdrift area is located in proximity to the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and the surrounding tourism catchment area. There are thousands of jobs that stem directly and indirectly from tourism and leisure in this area and its surroundings.

The department is concerned that these unfortunate incidents will have a direct impact on jobs generated by tourism, leisure and related business operations in the area.

A decline in these economic activities would result in devastating socio-economic consequences for surrounding local communities. The department recognises police efforts to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice and to keep residents and guests in the area safe and protected.

We appeal to residents and business owners to work together with law enforcement agencies and government to ensure that the area is free of crime.

Building safe communities and neighbourhoods is not only crucial for the wellbeing of communities but it is also a critical aspect for generating economic growth that is inclusive and creates decent jobs in the province.
