Government reviews policy to fight joblessness
The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) is reviewing its recruitment policies to extend its internal job advertisement to workers in its Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), Gauteng Infrastructure Development (GDID) MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza said in Randfontein, Mogale City today (Wednesday).
The Expanded Public Works Programme, one of government’s medium-to-long-term programmes is aimed at alleviating and reducing unemployment.
“We plan to place up to 80% young people who are currently in our EPWP and Zivuseni programmes for public employment Programmes. The EPWP Phase III youth target is 55%. This will be progressively increased towards 80% for new entrants into EPWP,” Mayathula-Khoza said at the launch of a faith based training and women empowerment NGO Women of Value South Africa.
The MEC said EPWP employment drive was one of the ways government was driving its radical socio-economic transformation across all spheres and levels of government.
“We are making a noticeable a dent against poverty through the provision of work opportunities coupled with the project based training opportunities we provide to the vulnerable in our communities.
She said this was part of the creation of sustainable employment programmes similar to the Gauteng Tshepo Tshepo 500 000, which aims to crate employment for 500 000 young people in the next four years.
