MEC Kekana congratulates successful boxing bouts in Polokwane
The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Nakedi Kekana has congratulated the Limpopo Championship Boxing Promotion for staging a sterling tournament at the Meropa Casiono and Entertainment in Polokwane on Friday, June 23.
The many bouts have drawn international and domestic tourism into the province, and mainly fostered nation building and social cohesion through the art. The Department is proud to have been in partnership with the organisation for such an outstanding event.
Among the scintillating bouts was the rematch of what was one of the best World Boxing Federation (WBF) title fights between Limpopo’s Junior Makondo and Jacques Muvud from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Clad in "Power to the
Youth" engraved shorts, Makondo carried the resilient fighting spirit of South Africans and became the new WBF Intercontinental Middleweight Champion.
MEC Kekana says; The successful tournament urges government to work to ensure that the long overdue need to focus on and ensure review of Boxing Regulations is concluded without fail and it be done urgently. The discourse
within the broader boxing fraternity regarding the artificial divide between professional and amateur boxing will be among the main focus areas of government so that the two could be intertwined to have seamless transmission to
the later, and produce champions of champions.
The MEC equally acknowledges the exhibition matches that were in the square ring. She says that the move is key in efforts to ensure that the message to the public is clear, that boxing is very much alive and those leading in our society are in support of it.
