MEC Mothibedi Kegakilwe addresses new councillors of Mamusa

The North West Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will continue to support the new council of Mamusa in Schweizer Reneke in line with Chapter 154 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

As he officially welcomed the new councillors soon after they were sworn-in on Wednesday, MEC Mothibedi Kegakilwe, said the department will in line with Constitution, continue to support and strengthen the capacity of Mamusa local municipality.

He said the provincial government did all it could to ensure that during the period of intervention, service delivery was not compromised.  “We had to work with other departments, using the district development model approach to ensure that the people of Mamusa were provided with services.

“You have a responsibility of ensuring that your community is provided with uninterrupted services, especially water.  This area has had a number of sewer pillages because of the water challenge in the area but the matter is being addressed.

“The Constitution dictates that Section 139(1)(C) intervention ends when a municipal  council is declared elected. As the council of Mamusa, your responsibility is to provide services to all the people of Mamusa regardless of their political affiliation”, he said.

He appealed to the new councillors to exercise good governance and to maximise public participation by involving communities in the affairs of the municipality. He thanked the residents “for allowing the Provincial Executive Council to perform the executive obligations in the absence of council to intervene in accordance of Section 139(1)(C) “.

Meanwhile, the new Mayor, Gotsilekgosi Batsi said the new council will work on an action plan post the intervention.
