MEC Molebats Bopape pursues Netball revival through Lead Schools project

Over 1 200 primary and secondary school girls between the ages 10 and 18 are set to participate at the Netball Lead Schools Festival, to be held on Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th of June at selected venues in areas around Germiston, Tshwane, Krugersdorp and Orange Farm.

The Netball Festival is part of the Lead Schools project, an initiative of the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education that aims to re-establish Netball as one of the major sporting codes in Gauteng schools.

The festival will feature 32 schools, from which 30 are previously disadvantaged schools that are part of the on-going Lead Schools project, selected from the provincial education districts (1 primary school and 1 secondary school per district).

Through the project the department has been able to support the schools with equipment, attire and other resources, capacity building for officials and coaches, as well as dedicated personnel to help develop the sport.

Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Molebatsi Bopape has committed to the development of netball, she said: “with this project our intention is to prepare the schools to “Lead” the revival of netball in their districts by sharing the opportunities presented by their participation in the project.

The Lead Schools Netball Festival presents an important opportunity for us to gauge the progress we’ve made with the project and create more opportunity for competition in order for the schools to improve.”
