MEC Mohono wishes Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) learners the best In their final exams

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono wishes the Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) learners within the department the best on their 2011 final examinations.

About 28 Human Settlements Branch officials who enrolled on Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) programme at the beginning of this year, started writing their final examinations on different numeracy, communication and pre-Abet levels on Tuesday morning. The learners are expected to write their final paper on Thursday, 8 December 2011.

“You managed to balance your work and studies not forgetting family responsibilities after all, this shows the total commitment you had to achieve good results at the end of the year.”

“We wish you the best on your final examinations, and be reminded that your excellence would serve as a motivation to those adults who are still reluctant to enrol on ABET,” said Mohono.

MEC Mohono said acquiring basic literacy skills empowers employees to become even more productive. “Enhancing one’s skill and knowledge helps our employees to take control over their own lives. Education is a pathway to a better life”.

As part of its commitment to improve the basic skills of its employees, the department held a workshop earlier this year, which was used as a platform to encourage its employees to enrol for ABET.

Mohono said through this training programme, more and more employees of the department will know how to read, write and count. This will further assist in eradicating illiteracy in the country as one of the nine priorities of the National Education Strategy. According to the current research conducted, there are an estimated 3.3 million illiterate adults in South Africa.

The enrolment of departmental employees on the ABET programme is consistent with the provision of the South African Constitution which affirms the rights of all citizens to basic education, including Adult Basic Education and Training.

ABET is available to all adults who want to complete their basic education or want to acquire knowledge in basic reading and writing. It further aims to provide basic learning tools, knowledge and skills.

Interested employees enrolled on ABET programme were assessed to ensure that they were correctly placed according to their level of understanding as they will be provided with the nationally-recognised qualification at the end of the syllabus. Students enrolled on ABET includes cleaners, grounds men, messengers and other low level employees of the department.
