MEC Mohono welcomes plans for expansion of visible policing in rural communities

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono has  expressed optimism that the expansion of visible policing in 17 villages across the province and the establishment of additional stock theft units will contribute significantly towards the reduction of crime in rural communities and in particular curb stock theft.

MEC Mohono was on Monday briefed on progress in this regard by South African Police Service (SAPS) Management led by Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Zukiswa Mbombo during the Peace Justice Crime Prevention and Safety meeting she held with cluster departments in Mahikeng.

Feasibility studies for building of new police stations have been completed inMoeka-Vuma, Mareetsane, Bapong, Mabieskraal, Bedwang, Dwarsberg,Tlakgameng, Kraaipan , Magong, Maboloka, Ramatlabama, Gaanalagte and Bodibe villages while phase two accessibility studies are underway in Supingstad, Glauidina, Shakung.

MEC Mohono said the intention of Matserre community to construct a police station out of their own funds with administrative support and supervision by SAPS should be welcomed as the community has embraced the spirit of working together to build better and safer communities.

Police Management reported that plans are advanced for the establishment of stock theft units in Madikwe and Taung given the high prevalence of stock theft related crimes in these areas.

In calling upon traditional leaders, farmers unions, farmers, sector departments, crime prevention structures and stakeholders in farming communities to work with the police in order to address challenges experienced with regard to stock theft in the province.

These include lack of brand marking, insufficient fencing, part time farmers not always on their farms, improper record keeping of stock and insufficient stock taking, insufficient pounds and the fact that not all farmers are incorporated in Agricultural Unions.
