North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono has called on the residents of Chaneng, Robega and Rasimone villages to embrace development opportunities for the benefit of their communities.
MEC Mohono made the call at a community meeting she held with the residents from the villages at Robega Community Hall on Tuesday afternoon.
The urgent meeting followed a threat by residents to disturb the ongoing project for construction of 300 housing units across the three villages. MEC Mohono did not mince words as she reprimanded those who were intending to disrupt the R16 million housing development project that has commenced in the said communities. Among other, the residents were threatening to disrupt the project due to what they regarded as slow pace by women contractors in other areas while there was progress in other villages.
They also complained about uneven distribution of the development across the village’s allocation and that some of the houses were constructed to those who do not deserve.
MEC Mohono warned that if the residents continue to delay construction, the department will move the development to on other villages where there was a dire need for housing delivery. She said that the houses were allocated according to need and those who qualified were prioritised.
The 300 housing units are part of the departmental annual women build programme targeted at empowerment of women contractors.
