North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono is upbeat that her department's revenue maximisation project dubbed Operation Lemoga, is among the seven projects shortlisted on the continent as finalists for the 2010 All Africa Public Sector Innovation Award (AAPSIA).
A team of adjudicators from Rwanda is expected in the province on Tuesday next week to conduct verification site visits to two shortlisted projects in the North West province, Operation Lemoga and Kaizen at Official Publications Depository Pharmacy at the Job Shimankana Tabane Provincial Hospital in Rustenburg.
According to MEC Mohono, the objective of the Provincial initiative named after a Setswana word Lemoga meaning “Be Aware” was to create awareness among motor vehicle owners and the general public on the process of registration and licensing of motor vehicles, farming and mining implements. The project commenced in October 2005.
Since its inception, the turn-around strategy reached and shared information with over 90 253 motor vehicle owners and contributed significantly towards reduction of R340 million that had accumulated in unpaid license fees that had accrued to motorists.
The project was awarded a gold and bronze medals in the 2008 MEC’s Excellence Awards of the former Provincial Department of Transport, Roads & Community Safety and the Premier’s Public Service Excellence Awards respectively.
The Lemoga project is to be showcased to the rest of the continent at the AAPSIA 7th Conference to be held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi, Kenya later this year.
Other projects from South Africa shortlisted for the 2010 AAPSIA finals in various categories are the:
- Results Slip Scanning Project
- Blue Print for Rural Sustainability
- Community based rehabilitation
- Development of innovative Service Development tool
- Learner Bus from KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport
