North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono intensified her anti-corruption drive by announcing re-evaluation of all existing contracts within the Public Safety branch of her department to determine their desirability. MEC Mohono announced the review at a meeting held with senior and middle managers in Mahikeng on Thursday.
The review follows Mohono’s earlier directive for non extension of Koster weighbridge contract and the contract for the execution of outstanding traffic warrants through a private service provider who was collecting 40% of executed warrants.
MEC Mohono said that value of service rendered through contracts need to be evaluated to establish whether value for money is derived and weighed against employment of additional personnel to perform some of the services in-house.
“It is unacceptable for the department to spend over R700 000 a month on some of the contracts because government is not the ladder for people to get undeserved millions. The bleeding of government resources has to stop,” Mohono stressed.
The MEC also committed to a hands-on approach to get to the bottom of Supply Chain processes, procedures and practices within the department that contributed towards the department receiving a qualified report from the Auditor General in the past two financial years.
