MEC Mohono saddened by three fatalities in road crashes

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Desbo Mohono is saddened by the deaths of three road users who died in two separate fatal crashes outside Rustenburg over the past weekend, the provincial department said in a statement on Tuesday.

MEC Mohono wishes to convey her condolences to the Bruwer, Vos and Jonker families on the loss of their loved ones in the crashes.

Twenty-nine year old Andries Vos who was driving a Nissan Hardbody bakkie and a passenger in the vehicle, 24 year old Christian Jonker died after their Nissan bakkie was hit by a Mitsubishi truck on the R512 old Pretoria-Rustenburg road on Saturday afternoon. The collision occurred around 5:45 pm at Buffelspoort near Karani Supermarket. 

It is alleged that the two vehicles were driving from Rustenburg towards Mooinooi when the Nissan Hardbody in which the deceased were driving suddenly made a U-turn and collided with the truck . Vos and Jonker died at the scene while the 57 year old truck driver was not injured.

On Friday evening, 67 year old CP Bruwer died after his Chana bakkie overturned on the R52 Rustenburg-Koster road as he was driving alone from Koster towards Rustenburg. It is alleged that the vehicle overturned due to a broken prop shaft. The accident occurred at around 6:00pm around.

Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving in both cases.
