North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono is saddened by reports that two people, a traffic officer and a motorcyclist who died as a result of the action of a suspected criminal who was driving a stolen bakkie. Both were knocked down in two related accidents on the N12 and in Klerskdorp in the North West province on Monday morning.
Though the details as to ages are still sketchy, it is alleged that the traffic officer had tried to stop the bakkie driven by the suspect for exceeding the speed limit when he was hit and flew over the bakkie before landing on the tarred road. The suspect fled from the scene at high speed under hot pursuit by the traffic officers’ colleagues.
The suspect was arrested in Klerksdorp after skipping a red robot and knocking down a motorcyclist, said to be a lawyer who died on the spot. He is in hospital under police guard after also sustaining injuries in the second accident.
MEC Mohono wishes to convey her condolences to the families that lost their loved ones through the actions of the heartless suspected criminal. Mohono also wishes to extend her condolences to the traffic officers’ colleagues in City of Matlosana Local Municipality Public Safety Directorate.
In condemning the callous actions of the suspect and commenting law enforcement officers for his arrest, the MEC called on the police who are investigating the case to consider investigating murder cases, reckless and or negligent driving and not culpable homicide. She said that there is no place in society for a heartless criminal who have no regard for the law and or the lives of others like the arrested suspect.
