North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Desbo Mohono is distraught and saddened by the death of 10 youth from Ipelegeng Township outside Schweizer-Reneke. The youth allegedly died in a stampede at Basotho tavern in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
In conveying condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones in the tragic incident, MEC Mohono urged police not to leave any stone unturned in their investigation as to what might have caused the tragic incident. MEC Mohono said the investigation should include whether the owner of the tavern had taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety of patrons at the tavern in accordance with his licence.
“Should this not be the case, they should consider charging the owner of the tavern for negligence and pursuing profit at the expense of safety of his patrons. Someone should be held accountable for the incident which has robbed families and community of valuable lives who were at the prime of their youth” emphasised Mohono.
She described the incident as the worst New Year celebration disaster ever to be experienced in the province and called on members of the community to assist police in their investigations.
