North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono is fuming and has called for an investigation as to why a motorist was reportedly released on warning instead of being locked-up and appearing in court following his arrest for doing 189 km/h on a 120 km/h speeding zone. The speedster was arrested outside Brits on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway in the North West province on Monday morning.
The 46 year old male driver said to be a member of the North West Operating Licensing Board was allegedly rushing to a meeting with a taxi association in Brits when he allegedly clocked the speed camera between Mooinooi and Brits at around 11h15.
The motorist who was driving an Audi A4 Cabriolet was escorted to Brits police station by the arresting officer from the Provincial Road Traffic Management Unit.
Though MEC Mohono has reserved comment on the incident pending a report on the incident, she is questioning whether any other motorist would have been accorded the same treatment for committing a similar offense.
“Preferential treatment for those who should be exemplary on public roads would be unacceptable hence there is a need to get to the bottom of the matter,” says MEC Mohono who had earlier in the day called for zero tolerance law enforcement during her keynote address delivered at the Bojanala Platinum District Crime Prevention Summit.
