North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono is to lead the Provincial Justice Crime Prevention & Security (PJCPS) Cluster community engagement session to empower communities on the functioning of the criminal justice system. The second session involving stakeholders in the Mahikeng, Zeerust and Lichtenburg Clusters in Ngaka Modiri Molema District is scheduled to be held at 10:00am on Thursday at the Embassy Hall in Mahikeng.
MEC Mohono says that the PJCPS community engagement session is intended at creating awareness among stakeholders regarding the implementation of the programmes of the Criminal Justice System role players and indentifying challenges, gaps and issues of concern that need to be addressed.
Mohono further says that the primary objective of the session is to educate stakeholders and communities on matters relating to criminal justice system, which includes among others issues of bail, Charter for victims of crime, child justice courts, cases closed as undetected, sexual offences intervention, school safety and issues of liquor license.
The need and relevance of the engagements led by the North West Department of Public Safety in partnership with the South African Police Service and the Provincial Community Policing Board were confirmed by numerous complaints from communities regarding services rendered by police. They are also intended at increasing community involvement in Crime prevention actions.
The roll-out of the sessions which also include cluster partners like the Independent Complaints Directorate, National Prosecuting Authority, Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Correctional Services, etc. were informed by a general observation that communities lack information with regard to how the criminal justice system works which impacts negatively on service delivery.
