MEC Mohono condemns looting of cow carcass by North West villagers

The trend by the community of Majemantsho village outside Mahikeng to loot carcasses at accident scenes should be condemned in the strongest terms possible as branded hides which are vital evidence needed to trace the owners of the animals are often lost, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono said in reaction to yet another incident on Monday evening.

The MEC says there is no justification for the unbecoming tendency as it robs owners from salvaging whatever is left of their livestock and maybe even take responsibility for neglecting their animals.

Suspicion that four cows were deliberately chased towards passing traffic resulting in a Toyota Quantum taxi that was from Lotlhakeng village towards Majemantsho hitting one of them were fuelled by the looting of the cow in less than ten minutes before police arrived at the accident scene.

Forty-seven year old taxi driver, Jantjie Mologetso is still amazed that the crowd that swooped on the injured cow like vultures did not bother to check whether any of the six occupants who were in the taxi were injured or not.

“All that was left was blood and waste from the intestines .They slaughtered and disposed of the cow in no time and vanished from the scene, “said Mologetso.

MEC Mohono wishes to warn owners of livestock that animals left wandering without shepherds will be impounded by law enforcement officers to reduce accidents causes by stray animals.
