MEC Mohono condemns female miner’s violent death, appeals for calm and cooperation with investigations

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono condemned in the strongest terms possible the callous murder of a female employee at Khomanani Mine in Rustenburg and called on police not to spare efforts until those responsible are behind bars.

In expressing sympathies to the miner’s family and her co-workers, MEC Mohono said that its shocking beyond imagination that an employee would die such a violent death in the workplace.

The unfortunate incident reportedly occurred underground and according to Anglo American Platinum preliminary investigations indicate that the female employee was violently assaulted and died from the injuries on the morning of 6 February 2012.

Mohono appealed for calm and called on employees to assist police in their investigations.

“Whilst we are encouraged by the cooperation and determination of Anglo American Platinum to get to the bottom of the matter as a responsible and compassionate employer, we call on the company and other mining houses to review their safety plans to ensure that incidents of underground crime more especially those involving women do not reoccur at any of our mines”, said the MEC.
