North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono has made a commitment to fast track and deliver the R3,1 million project for construction of houses for the community of people with disability in Itsoseng near Lichtenburg. MEC Mohono promised that the houses will be delivered in the next 60 days during a meeting she held with beneficiaries at the Itsoseng Handy Craft Centre on Tuesday afternoon.
MEC Mohono apologised to the beneficiaries for the delay ofthe housing project which is intended to build 48 housing units. The project came to a halt due to challenges related to allocation of land, misunderstanding among stakeholders and dolomite detected on the project site.
The MEC emphasised quality in the construction of the houses and further explained to the beneficiaries that her department does not have the resources to include some of their demands for geysers, paving and other amenities.
However, Mohono made it clear that the National Department together with provinces are guided by the Housing Code Policy that provides R1 000 for disability accessories which were accommodated in the initial plans enrolled with the National Home Builders Registration Council.
“Though the department does not have money to cover the demands, we commit to plaster the inside of the houses instead of backwashing them and advise community leaders to engage local business and the municipality to assist in the inclusion of the required extras,” said Mohono.
