North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono commends police for the arrest of four people for defrauding the Road Accident Fund (RAF). The couples arrested earlier this week in Rustenburg are expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrates court on 31 October 2011.
MEC Mohono said that she is confident that everything will be done to recover what was lost to the fund through greed and that where such monies cannot be recovered, the asset forfeiture unit will move in to recover proceeds of crime.
Frederick Johannes Kruger, 28 and his girlfriend Maliska Barnard, 23, allegedly posed as bogus medical doctors for the submission of the fraudulent claim while Legal clerk Marthie Fredericka Mulder, 39 with the involvement of Joubertus Herman Mulder, 41 allegedly used a law firm’s company trust to channel payments received from the RAF to other accounts.
The Mulders were arrested on Monday and granted bail R25 000 bail on Wednesday. Kruger and his girlfriend were arrested on Tuesday and are still in police custody. Police opposed their bail on Thursday as they regard them as flight risk. The couple’s formal bail application is to be heard on Wednesday.
