North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono has called on schools and universities to intensify road safety education among young people, media to report more widely and responsibly about the lack of road safety and celebrities and the entertainment industry not to glamourise speed and to wear seatbelts and helmets.
MEC Mohono made the call in support of the United Nations 2011/22 Decade of Action for Road Safety in a speech delivered on her behalf at the Provincial Participatory Education Techniques Road Safety Competition held at the Mmabana Taung Centre on Friday.
Tlhabane Technical High School from Bojanala Platinum District earned a place to represent the North West Province in the national competition to be held later this year by scooping the first position at the 3rd annual provincial competition that had 80 participants that constituted 8 teams. The gender balanced 10 members team of learners won themselves R8000.
The team’s model based which emerged as the best in the competition depicted road safety challenges experienced at Fox Lake in Tlhabane in Rustenburg Local Municipality.
It proposed construction of pedestrian over bridge on Dr. Moroka drive, installation of additional traffic lights, installation of automatic boom gates at the Zinniaville railway level crossing, drop-off zones for learners at their schools, construction of side-walks for pedestrians and street humps.
Mogawane High School from Ngaka Modiri Molema District won the R6000 second prize while the R4000 third prize went to Mankuruane High School from the hosting Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District.
The MEC encouraged participating schools to canvas their solutions and models to their municipalities for inclusion in their Integrated Development Plans (IDP’s) so that the ingenuity and research they had undertaken is not lost but implemented in order to save lives.
Learners from Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District gave positive appraisal of the Road Ranger Programme which they said had saved the lives of many road users on the N18 Mahikeng/Vryburg-Taung Road and the R378 Vryburg /Ganyesa-Tosca roads and called for its continuation.
