MEC Mohono calls on communities to unite against police killings

The arrest of three suspects in connection with the murder of  Warrant Officer Obakeng Nelson Ganenang should signal to heartless criminals that those who kill police will be pursuit relentlessly until they are arrested and removed from society, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono said on Wednesday.

MEC Mohono condemns in the strongest terms the brutal attack in which Detective Ganenang who was attached to the Priority Crime Investigating unit, known as the Hawks died after being shot with four bullets during a robbery at his girlfriend’s house in Mocoseng village in Mahikeng on Sunday.

“When communities are not united against crime, criminals find the space and time to continue with their reign of terror. We call on communities to unite against police killings and work with police to uproot those who have no respect for human life from their streets and neighbourhoods,” stressed Mohono.

According to police, the 42 year-old Detective was relaxing in the sitting room with his girlfriend and their three children when there was a knock at the door at around 8:30 pm and two unknown people entered and pointed firearms at the adults and children. The thugs allegedly demanded money before they started shooting.

The first shot reportedly hit the officer’s girlfriend on the right thigh while three bullets hit Ganenang on the head and another hit him on his right shoulder. The attackers ransacked the house after the shooting and made off with the deceased’s laptop, two cellphones, his service pistol and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Ganeneng’s girlfriend is said to be in a serious but stable condition in hospital while his three children were unharmed.

The callous murder of Ganenang brings to four the number of policemen killed in the North West province and 62 the number of men and women in dignified blue killed nationally since the beginning of the year.
