North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono has appealed to communities to refrain from unlawful action and violent protests but to instead opt for dialogue and constructive engagement around their community development issues.
MEC Mohono’s plea follows renewed public violence that erupted in Bapong and Segwaelane villages outside Brits in the North West on Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, a case of malicious damage to property was opened after a truck was set alight and some roads barricaded with burning tyres during protests.
“Police will not stand idle and watch lawlessness and criminality but would act to protect properties and the lives of the innocent,” warned MEC Mohono.
North West Road Traffic Management authorities advised motorists travelling on the Brits-Rustenburg and Brits-Sun City roads to avoid the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway.
The authorities advised motorists travelling between Brits and Rustenburg and those travelling from and towards Sun City to use the R512 Old Pretoria-Rustenburg road through Rustenburg as an alternative road.
The residents were allegedly concerned about unemployment and apparently angry with local companies, including Lonmin Platinum Mine, claiming it had failed to create jobs for them.
