Plans are at an advanced stage for North West Road Traffic Management authorities to roll-out a 24 hour road traffic enforcement shift. North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety& Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono announced the introduction and implementation of the ground breaking move at a briefing session of National Council of Provinces delegates held in Mogwase on Tuesday. The shift system will come into effect from 1 October 2011.
MEC Mohono said that the introduction of the shift is intended to improve visibility of traffic officers across public roads, reduce road accidents and fatalities across public roads in the province.
MEC Mohono said that the break period in traffic law enforcement between 10:00pm and 6:00 am during which most accidents occurred from Wednesdays to Saturdays will be closed as a result of the 24 hour shift.
“We are taking action for safer roads as part of our support for the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety and the National Rolling Enforcement Plan in order to clamp down on lawlessness on our public roads,” added the MEC
