MEC Mekgwe updates community leaders on progress of Zola/Jabulani Hospital

In an effort to keep the community informed about developments in health, Gauteng Health and Social Development MEC, Ntombi Mekgwe met community leaders from Jabulani, Zola and Emndeni in Soweto yesterday afternoon.

The purpose of the meeting was to update them on the progress of Zola/Jabulani Hospital which aims to transform health services in Johannesburg South and to relieve pressure on Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, enabling it to function as a specialist hospital.

The MEC, who also gave details to the leaders on how the hospital will function, emphasised that it is still important for members of the community to visit local clinics and be referred to hospitals when necessary to avoid overcrowding. The system of referral will allow the hospital to function better.

In the vicinity of the hospital, there is the Zola Gateway Clinic which was officially opened in September 2009. It operates on Mondays to Fridays from 7h00 to 16h00 and Saturdays from 7h00 to 13h00. It is intended that the clinic will be operational for 24 hours once the hospital is opened and functional. The services offered are that of Comprehensive Primary Health Care Centre.

The new 300 level 1 bed hospital with a contract value of R665.7 million is expected to be completed in September 2012. The procurement processes for equipment is in progress and deliveries are expected from next week.

The services to be offered at the new hospital include: Emergency and Trauma unit, High Care, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Midwifery, Gynaecology, Rehabilitation services and Dentistry.
