Gauteng MEC for Health and Social Development, Ntombi Mekgwe has condemned the attack on a woman with a disability by a taxi driver yesterday in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni.
Thirty five year old Mavis Mketelwa was allegedly assaulted by a taxi driver following an argument after she refused to get off the minibus taxi.
MEC Mekgwe has called on the police to ensure that through investigation is conducted and that the suspect is brought to justice.
“It is deeply regrettable that as we approach the 16 days of Activism of no Violence Against Women and Children we continue to experience incidents of women abuse. We cannot allow a situation where the rights of women are violated particularly those with disabilities. Everyone has the right to dignity and respect,” she said.
MEC also called on members of the public to frown upon such behaviour and report incidents of abuse whenever they occur.
The department has a mandate to ensure that the rights of the vulnerable groups such as women, children and persons with disabilities are protected in accordance with the constitution.
