Gauteng Department of Community Safety MEC, Nonhlanhla Mazibuko, today wished all the citizens of Gauteng a safe and enjoyable festive season. She reassured the citizens that all law enforcement agencies in Gauteng are on hand to protect all citizens in all communities. Gauteng citizens and visitors can do their shopping, travel the province in full knowledge that the province has put measures in place to secure them.
The MEC further appealed to communities to act and protect the most vulnerable in our communities, particularly women and children. "We are determined to ensure that this is our safest festive season ever in the province," said MEC Mazibuko. On road safety, a comprehensive plan is being implemented by all law enforcement agencies across the province to ensure safety and curb lawlessness on our roads.
Intensified operations will be conducted on major roads in the province, including the N1, N3, N4, N12, N14, R21 and the R59. Motorists are urged to comply with the law and cooperate with the operations, which are for their safety. In addition, the MEC emphasised the use of seatbelts, which has very low compliance levels in the province. Heavy penalties will be meted out against motorists found not using their seatbelts.
Motorists should also avoid putting young kids on front seats of vehicles, and rather use prescribed seats for that purpose. Unroadworthy vehicles found on our roads will be discontinued. Intolerance will also be shown to jaywalking, drinking and driving as well as public dinking. Zero tolerance will be shown in this regard. Illegal usage of blue lights as well installation of blue light for decorative purposes will also be dealt with harshly.
"The costs of road accidents and fatalities are just too high for us to adopt a lenient approach on the roads. We will meet lawlessness with the necessary resolve to make our roads safer," said Mazibuko. In expressing the province's intolerance to lawlessness, the MEC added that in Gauteng 'Asi bhayi iskelm siyabopha'
