MEC Max praises law authorities on success in enhanced traffic law enforcement since start of school holidays

The MEC for Community Safety, Advocate Lennit Max, has praised the work of provincial traffic, South African Police Services (SAPS), municipal police as well as traffic, after their law enforcement operations were increased on national and provincial roads for the September school holidays.

Since Wednesday, 23 September to Sunday, 27 September, 9 816 Vehicles were stopped and inspected at various road blocks and vehicle check points (VCP). 2 884 summonses were issued for various traffic offences.

Max said that this enforced clamp down on transgressors of the traffic laws definitely resulted in safer roads and that many travellers could enjoy a safe voyage. He met with provincial traffic centre managers on Monday to discuss the weekend’s successes as well as enhanced traffic plans.

He expressed his concern that too many drivers still ignore the laws of the road (driver behaviour) where drivers make themselves guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol, exceed the legal speed limits, overtake where it is unsafe to do so, overload their vehicles or don't rest (driver fatigue). Also he reiterated that any person that transgresses traffic laws and thereby placing the lives of other road users at risk will be severely dealt with.

Max said that this enhanced law enforcement is a commitment from the Department of Community Safety to ensure that all road users do arrive safely home.
