MEC Leeto congratulates Lereko Secondary School on Basketball Title

The Free State MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mrs. Mathabo Leeto would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Lereko Secondary School from Bloemfontein for being crowned the champions at the 27th annual Val Fowler Basketball tournament hosted in Pietermaritzburg on 3 - 5 August 2018. After finishing as runners-up in last year’s tournament against St Mary’s Waverley, the two teams met again in the final this year, with Lereko trumping St Mary’s with 44 to 29.

Not only did the team take the spoils, but Malefu Khene from Lereko Secondary School was named the “Player of the tournament”. A total of 24 teams from 16 schools played in matches hosted at both Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School and St. John’s Diocesan School for Girls. Schools as far as Free State, Gauteng and even Zimbabwe participated in this event. One of the highlights of the Tournament was the exhibition of unique skills by “Rim Rumblers” from the Hoops Afrique Foundation, made up of NBA players.

“As we celebrate women’s month and while the Department is promoting the advancement and development of women and girls in sport, this result is an indicator of the sporting prowess the Free State has to offer. Lereko Secondary School has shown the rest of the country what can be done with dedication and hard work. I am proud to congratulate these young athletes on this tremendous achievement.” stated MEC Mathabo Leeto.
