The MEC for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Madala Masuku has condemned in the strongest possible terms the arson attack on municipal offices and graders in Lilydale, Bushbuckridge Local Municipality.
MEC Masuku has stated that while government respect’s the rights of individual’s to protest however such protests should be within the ambit of the law. “As government we will not allow people to engage in criminal activities, vandalise and destroy public property. We call upon the law enforcement to investigate and apprehend as a matter of urgency all those implicated in these senseless attacks, so that they can face the full might of the law.” said Masuku.
He further added that government is aware of the water problems faced by communities in Bushbuckridge and is working around the clock to resolve them. The Nyaka Dam project is currently underway to address water challenges in the area. Whilst the problem is being addressed water is being provided to communities through water tankers. “People must not allow criminal elements to mislead them with disinformation. We also encourage the community leaders and the community at large to engage in dialogue to resolve any dispute,” said Masuku.
The Municipality and the Department of Wafer Affairs have dispatched a technical team to investigate the issues raised by the community during their protest.
