MEC Masike on investigation into police monitoring of taverns in Ipelegeng North West Acting MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Dr Magome Masike has welcomed the investigation into police monitoring of taverns in Ipelegeng on New Year eve as announced by Police Commissioner, General Bheki Cele on Sunday.

General Cele announced the investigation at the mass funeral of 7 victims of the Ipelegeng stampede held at the Ipelegeng Sports Ground. The last of the victims who died at the now infamous Basotho Inn, Bongani Molantwa (21) was buried at the Ipelegeng cemetery on Monday morning.

MEC Masike comments the community of Ipelegeng for the restraint, calm and dignified manner in which they conducted themselves in the days leading to, during and after the funerals of the 10 victims of the stampede.

Eight hundred and eighty one liquor premises were inspected by police across the province and 194 illegal outlets closed as part of Operation Duty Calls Festive Season Crime Prevention Campaign that commenced on 1 October 2010.
