The Eastern Cape Department of Transport in collaboration with the Department of Roads and Public Works honoured the long overdue, National Human Rights month through embarking on developmental activities that will benefit people with disabilities and trigger awareness on disability issues and disability culture in these departments at the Good News Christian Centre on Tuesday, 24 April 2012.
"We are aware that these two departments have a great potential to lead the province on creating economic and job opportunities for Disabled People, as such we are also engaging the Disabled Sector with the view to identify and implement sustainable and integrated interventions that would transform the livelihood of People with Disabilities", said MEC for Transport, Roads and Public Works, Thandiswa Marawu.
In marking the Disability Awareness Drive for a better shape three disability centers in Amathole Region were identified as pilot areas and they include:
- Vukuhambe Special School- Mdantsane
- St Patrick's School for disability- Ginsberg
- Kungothando- Tsholomnqa
A needs analysis per centre was done to improve conditions in terms of infrastructure development and living conditions for learners and the following are the items that need to be executed:
- Erection of ramps
- Painting
- Grass Cutting
- Some minor renovations
- Fixing of Broken windows and
- Door locks and leaking pipes
The two departments have also collected clothes, toys and other items from fellow employees as donations to the identified centres for people with disabilities.
