The MEC for Transport Thadiswa Marawu held a memorial service for the 13 Elliotdale people who died in a taxi accident in Kuilsriver in the Western Cape earlier this year and were burnt beyond recognition, at Elliotdale Sportsgrounds on Thursday, 14 April 2011.
In honouring the memory of the deceased, the department has promised to strengthen its efforts to combat road accidents, especially in this important period of the Easter holidays.
'I have instructed my department to work closely with the Road Accident Fund (RAF) in order to ensure that the deceased are buried with dignity and that their families get what is due to them,' said Marawu.
The department has stressed that as government there is no way that we can fold our arms when our people are in distress, because institutions like the RAF were created to deal with these kinds of situation and our people need to know how to access such services in order to avoid being abused by lawyers, who steal their money.
