MEC Marawu to launch Easter weekend Arrive Alive campaign

The MEC for Transport in the Eastern Cape Thandiswa Marawu will be joined by Premier Noxolo Kiviet, to launch the 2011 Easter Arrive Alive campaign at Kei Bridge, on 21 April 2011 at 12h00.

This forms part of the MEC Marawu’s declaration of 2011 as “A year of intensified road safety activities”, which is in line with the United Nation’s “Decade of Action” for Road Safety campaign, which seeks to stabilise and then reduce global road deaths by 2020, especially in developing countries, including South Africa.

As scores of people are expected on our roads driving home to celebrate the Easter holidays with their families and friends, a roadblock will be held and will focus on:

  • Driver fitness: documentation, fatigue, alcohol abuse.
  • Moving violations: barrier lines, red light infringements, cell phones misuse, excessive speeding.
  • Overloading: passenger and public / freight transport vehicles.
  • Vehicle fitness: documentation, roadworthiness and registration plate enforcement.
  • Pedestrian safety: pedestrian jay-walking, drink and walk.
  • Seatbelts: used by front and rear seat passengers.
  • Vehicle visibility: defective front and rear lamps.
  • Following distances: between heavy vehicles, inconsiderate driving.

“Let us all continue to collectively make a difference in these Easter holidays given the envisaged high traffic volumes on our roads through sensitising and entrenching the message of ‘arriving alive’ and ‘obeying the rules of the road’,” says MEC Marawu.

All road users are encouraged to report road accidents and incidents to our Customer Care Centre through our toll free number 0800 644 644.
