September is that period of the year in which Limpopo hosts one of the biggest gatherings on the African continent, namely, the pilgrimage to Moria. This year the pilgrimage takes place at the same time as the Province will be hosting the National Tourism Month. Moria is amongst the many tourist destinations Limpopo prides itself in.
Upholding the provincial vision of ensuring a safe and secure province, the MEC responsible for Department of Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison, Ms. Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana will deploy over one thousand two hundred traffic officials on all major Limpopo roads for 24 hours for the Moria pilgrimage.
The Province is expecting heavy traffic flow over the Moria pilgrimage weekend. Traffic officials will be working from Maubane to Beit Bridge monitoring traffic flow on the N1.The department will deploy traffic officials on the R71 from Polokwane via Moria gate to Mopani, R37 from Polokwane via Maja cross to Burgersfort, R101, R36, R81, R521 and Gilead road via Matlala to Grobler’s bridge on our boarders with Botswana.
Traffic officials will be monitoring traffic flow, conducting point duty, monitoring stray animals and pedestrians.
The R71 into Moria is under construction and the department would like to alert Motorists to drive with caution as they ramp into Moria City.
The MEC Mokaba-Phukwana further calls on all road users to:
- obey all the rules of the road,
- exercise patience,
- refrain from drinking and driving ;and
- take a rest when feeling tired.
She urges law enforcement officers to show no mercy to traffic law violators. “We will also strengthen our road safety campaign. Government welcomes partnerships that will assist in encouraging good behavior on the roads and ensure that the people of the Province feel safe on our roads. Together we will move South Africa forward”, MEC Mokaba –Phukwana said.
