MEC Maloyi intensifies social market campaigns in ensuring road safety

The Department of Human Settlements Public Safety and Liaison has recruited about 150 road safety rangers in partnership with the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport with the objective of managing the movement of stray animals on public roads.

The move was undertaken in a bit to reduce such incidents and be proactive in curbing accidents that are caused by stray animals mostly in rural areas of the province. “We plead with livestock owners to take care of their livestock and ensure that they remove them from public roads,” concluded Maloyi.

According to the department, the move is a contribution towards the Decade of Action for Road Safety campaign 2011 to 2020. The Department will further intensify social marketing campaigns to help influence attitudes and opinions on the need for road traffic safety programmes in the province.

This was pronounced by the departmental MEC, Hon Nono Maloyi during his 2012/13 financial year budget speech presentation at the Provincial Legislature this morning.

Maloyi said the action to increase road safety will mainly focus on scholar patrollers, safety education, Speed and Safety belts. “In implementing this, we will be focusing mainly on the speed as the main cause, pedestrian jay walking, hit and run and following distance,” said Maloyi.

In an effort to further promote road safety the departmental MEC further announced that the department has implemented a pilot project by recruiting 25 road safety volunteers in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District to work closely with scholar patrol teams to assist learners to safely cross the roads to and from school.
