The Gauteng MEC for Health and Social Development, Qedani Mahlangu, sends her condolences to the Msimang family following the passing away of the former health minister Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.
Dr Tshabalala-Msimang showed remarkable confidence in the public health sector. She preferred utilising the services of Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic hospital when in need of medical attention.
She had been in this hospital awaiting a new transplant until a few days before her death when her doctors transferred her to the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre.
She remained committed to the improvement of the health of citizens of this country to the end. Despite her ailing health, she still had time to take part in health awareness campaigns. A few weeks before being admitted to hospital, Dr Tshabalala-Msimang joined health workers in the measles immunisation campaign in Soweto.
She will be remembered as a champion who dedicated her life to building a reliable, responsive, caring and well-managed public health system in South Africa.
