The provision of sanitary services in a school environment is a basic right to both learners and teachers. Schools that are built without toilet facilities are as good as not being there in the first place.

MEC Magadzi understands very well that for a school building to serve its holistic purpose ablution facilities are none negotiable. That saw MEC Magadzi recently launching the sanitary programme in Maope School in Bela Bela. The neighbouring secondary schools including Raeleng also benefitted from the sanitation programme.

Accompanied by Amos Bvuma, the face of Nivea skin lotion, Mayor of Bela Bela, Mr R Hlongoane principal of Raeleng School, Mr Mashishi, Ms S Sono, the principal of Maope Secondary and the contractor who was building toilets in the affected schools, MEC Magadzi officially launched the programme of building toilets in the schools. “The fact that in some schools learners walk more than 40 metres to get to the toilets, it’s not acceptable,” said Magadzi.

She went futher to say that denying learners this right while feeding them nutritious meal on daily basis the education system will be failing our leaners. She appealed to members of the School Governing Body from the nearby schools to take care of the toilets as their own. She said no one from outside will come and keep their facilities clean if they neglect them.

Mr R Combrinck, a contractor whose company was building the toilets pledged a cheque of an amount of ten thousands rands to Raeleng School to use towards improving the quality of education. He appealed to the young people to stop seeing the world through negative eyes. He said South Africa as a country has beautiful things around and all we need to do is to appreciate the beauty around.
