The MEC for Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Mpumalanga, Madala Masuku has sent his condolences to the families of the two people who died in a freak storm in the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality. A number of families were left homeless when their houses were damaged by the storm.
Disaster management officials are currently conducting assessments of the damage. Preliminary reports indicate that the affected areas are Songeni, Mabumba, New Forest and Dingle dale A and B. Approximately 100 families were affected and have lost furniture, clothing, blankets and food.
The provincial government, the Ehlanzeni District and Bushbuckridge Local Municipality have provided tents, blankets and food parcels to the affected areas.
MEC Masuku has assured the community that government will work hard to assist the affected families. “As an interim measure we have provided immediate humanitarian relief to the affected areas and families. We will await the assessment report that will indicate what further assistance we need to deploy to the affected areas” said Masuku.
MEC Masuku has further warned communities to be careful of flashfloods as they can be extremely dangerous and can lead to a sudden rise in river and stream levels.
