MEC Madala Masuku donates stationery to Cyril Clark High School

Mpumalanga Finance MEC Madala Masuku and Vodacom donate stationery hampers

In a move to provide support to disadvantaged schools in Mpumalanga, about 900 learners of Cyril Clark High School, in Mataffin, Nelspruit received additional learner support material. The stationery hampers, which were donated by Vodacom Foundation, were handed over to the learners by the MEC for Finance, Mr Madala Masuku.

Each of the learners at the school received a stationery pack packed with items such as scientific calculators, pens, pencil cases and ballpoint pens.

Speaking during the handover of the stationery packs on Friday, 14 February 2014, MEC Masuku said “the donation of stationery is a relief to the school since they had been struggling for some time without enough resources to assist the learners to excel in other areas of work, including mathematics”.

"We are committed to assist all learners to be well-prepared future leaders who will take the country and its people forward”, said MEC Masuku. He urged the learners to protect and use the stationery wisely so that they can experience the goodwill through which the donation was made by Vodacom Foundation.

Mr Masuku labelled the occasion as a demonstration of a democratic practice, which aims to improve the quality of education and consequently the lives of the learners. “The things we are struggling with today are as a result of an undemocratic government which never wanted to prepare us to be equal participants in the economy.

“You are very fortunate because you have access to everything that could prepare you for a better and brighter future. “Make use of the opportunities to get better education,” he told the visibly ecstatic learners. MEC acknowledged the work done by Vodacom and many other corporate citizens.

Ms Silindile Ngcobo from Vodacom said that this initiative is aiming at providing stationery to 180 000 learners from quintile one and two primary and high schools across the country. She said the key objective of the Stationery Drive campaign is to support the Department of Basic Education in its mandate by providing to disadvantaged schools in the country.

“Our goal is to ensure that learners throughout the country have access to basic tools to start the new school year that started few weeks ago,” said Ms Ngcobo.

Excited Grade 11 learner, Themba Sibiya expressed his delight and said, “I am very thankful to the MEC and the Vodacom team for their generous support. This means a lot to us and as Cyril Clark learners, we promise to thank you properly by achieving the best results come end of year.”
