MEC Lebogang Motlhaping on road safety in Northern Cape

NC Transport MEC concerned over the recent number of lives lost on the Province’s roads.

Northern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison in the Northern Cape,  Lebogang Motlhaping is concerned about the number of lives recently lost on the Province’s roads.

This week 7 people in two different accidents lost their lives, of which two were children.

In one accident this week, a male driver and two children died on the scene after a vehicle overturned on the R31 Barkley West Road while the mother and a girl child survived the accident.

In another accident, 4 people died on the scene on the Douglas road when a vehicle collided with a truck.  The driver of the truck survived and was transported to hospital while 3 occupants of the sedan died on the scene.

MEC Motlhaping, expressed his heartfelt condolences.  “I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and communities at large of the bereaved families.  And also extend condolences on behalf of the Northern Cape Provincial Government.  We are truly devastated with the loss of lives in our lives,” he said.

“It is truly unfortunate that we continue to lose precious lives on our Province’s roads and moreover, our children and parents,” he said.

He further said, “I am truly concerned with the number of lives we continue to lose on our roads.  It cannot be said enough that, one life lost is one too many.  We need to hold hands as government, transport sector, communities and all road users at large to ensure we create safer roads and atmosphere for driving,” he further added.

We need to observe the rules of the road to ensure we all Arrive Alive. Here are some tips we can put into practice:

  • Buckle up all passengers and drivers, and children are in child restraints seats.
  • Drive within the speed limit.
  • Not overtake when it is not safe to do so.
  • Drive sober and ensure when taking medication, it is conducive for driving.
  • Ensure driver and vehicle fitness before any journey.

Let us all remember that Road Safety is Everyone’s Responsibilities and ensure we all Arrive Alive.
