MEC launches Quality Teaching and Learning Campaign

The Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) has been going around the province launching the Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign (QLTC) to promote learning and teaching in the districts.

Fort Beaufort was the last stop for MEC Mandla Makupula to launch the campaign. The campaign comes after the realisation of the decline in the quality of teaching and dropout rate of learners at schools. Addressing teachers and parents, Makupula said that 'everyone has a role to play in education and each one has to make sure that they play that role’.

According to Makupula, this campaign is aimed at enhancing teaching and schooling morale. He said teachers were expected to be at school during school hours teaching and learners to be in class learning at all times. The MEC also used this platform to outline status of education in the province by highlighting issues of scholar transport, school nutrition and temporary educators.

Speaking on the issue of transporting learners that has been making headlines recently Makupula said that “transport is no longer a problem of Education Department because the function has been taken to the Department of Transport. Education Department doesn’t have traffic officers to check whether the busses are roadworthy or not.”

Explaining the procedures of school nutrition the MEC informed the community that the School Nutrition Programme is funded by the national Department. He went on to say that "it is the duty of the principal and the school governing body to choose where they wish to buy their supplies as long as they comply with the menu they are given by the department."

Making his conclusion, MEC thanked the ANC Youth League’s Fort Beaufort branch for taking the initiative of cleaning the school in their 67minutes for Mandela Day. The paint and brushes according to the MEC to paint the school were brought by the ECDoE.
