AS part of her first 100 days in office programme, Transport and Safety MEC Ghishma Barry has launched Port Elizabeth's David Livingstone High School's safety committee.
The committee is integrated with local street committees in Schauderville. Its objectives are to promote an integrated approach to enhance safety and security in schools and mobilise communities to improve the quality of teaching and learning.
Schauderville is an area plagued by drug abuse, gangsterism, high unemployment and other social problems that contribute to criminal activities. At the launch on Friday, Barry outlined the Department of Safety and Liaison's mass mobilisation strategy to promote participation in the fight against crime, with a particular focus on the promotion of safety and security in schools.
The event also featured entertainment by the Department of Correctional Services choir, Marcelle Wellman and band, a police dog unit demonstration and a rugby match between Ebenhezer and Ex-Livvies.
