Mahikeng: MEC Kenetswe Mosenogi has applauded the North West Provincial Treasury for maintaining its clean audit outcome for thirteen years. Mosenogi expressed that the 2025/26 financial year audit outcome demonstrates that the department is reinforcing its longstanding record of sound financial management, good governance and accountability in the management of public resources. The outcome follows the conclusion of the Auditor-General of South Africa’s (AGSA) audit of the Provincial Treasury for the financial year ended 31 March 2026.
The MEC echoed that the clean audit means that the Provincial Treasury’s financial statements were found to be free from material misstatements and that no material findings were raised in respect of the areas covered by the audit. “The achievement builds on the Treasury’s sustained record of clean audit outcomes over more than a decade and demonstrates the department’s continued commitment to maintaining strong financial management systems, effective internal controls and compliance with applicable legislation. It demonstrates the importance of institutional discipline and consistent adherence to sound financial management practices”, she expressed.
“A clean audit is not simply an award or an end in itself. It is an affirmation that public resources are being managed within established financial management and governance frameworks. We are particularly encouraged that Provincial Treasury has been able to sustain this standard over many years. The outcome also placed a responsibility on Provincial Treasury to use its institutional capability to support improvements across the broader provincial government and local government system”, she said.
Welcoming the audit outcome, Head of Department Ndlela Kunene said: “Provincial Treasury must lead by example. Our own clean audit outcome strengthens our resolve to support departments, entities, municipalities and public institutions in improving financial management, strengthening accountability and ultimately ensuring that public resources translate into better outcomes for the people of the North West.”
Kunene acknowledged the contribution of the department’s management and employees to maintaining a high standard of financial governance. “This achievement belongs to the entire Provincial Treasury. It reflects the daily work of officials who ensure that financial management processes are followed, controls are maintained and public resources are managed responsibly. I commend our officials for their commitment and professionalism,” he said.
The clean audit outcome comes against the backdrop of significant financial management challenges confronting the public sector, particularly at local government level. AGSA’s most recent publicly released provincial audit outcomes for 2024/25 showed that North West Provincial Treasury was among the province’s clean-audit departments, while the province continued to face significant challenges in improving the audit outcomes of municipalities. AGSA has emphasized the need for stronger institutional capability, governance and accountability across government.
MEC Mosenogi said Provincial Treasury would continue working with provincial departments, entities, municipalities and other public institutions to strengthen financial management and improve audit outcomes. “Our clean audit must not become a reason for complacency. It must become a platform from which we intensify our support to the rest of the system. The real measure of success is not only whether Treasury receives a clean audit, but whether we are able to contribute meaningfully to improving financial governance across the province,” she said.
The Provincial Treasury will continue implementing measures aimed at strengthening financial management, supply chain management, internal controls, consequence management and institutional capacity across the provincial and local government spheres.
