North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mothibedi Kegakilwe, has encouraged government institutions to work closely with the Community Development Workers (CDWs) to accelerate service delivery to communities. This, MEC Kegakilwe mentioned at the Provincial CDW Policy Summit held recently in Mmabatho. The main objective of the provincial summit was to consult stakeholders at a provincial level on the content of the CDW policy.
MEC Kegakilwe said the department will continue building working relationships with government departments and other structures to bridge the information gap between government and communities. "In order for us to ensure that we better the lives of our communities, we need all stakeholders to play their respective roles and most importantly, co-operate with the CDWs", he said. He said the department was fully aware of the strained relationship between CDWs and councillors in some municipalities and that the issue was receiving attention.
The CDW programme is an integral part of government’s access strategy, designed for the purpose of accelerating service delivery by taking government services to communities. The rationale for the development of the CDW policy emanated from a gap that was identified between the provision of government service and the effective utilisation of service delivery by members of poor and disadvantaged communities. Inputs will be consolidated into a final CDW policy.
