MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela conducts oversight inspections at major road infrastructure sites

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, today, Monday, 18 May 2026, led oversight inspection visits to the Tsamaya Road (K54) and Garsfontein Road (K50) projects in the City of Tshwane.

The purpose of the visits was to monitor, assess, and verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the projects, as well as to ensure that they are being implemented in accordance with approved plans, budgets, and quality standards.

Speaking during the inspections of the K54 and K50 projects, the MEC said: “We are pleased that both projects are progressing well, and we are hopeful that they will be completed on time and within budget.”

“The K54 and K50 projects are critical investments in Gauteng’s future. Improved road infrastructure will enhance mobility, reduce travel times, stimulate economic activity, and create opportunities for communities across the province,” added the MEC.

The primary objective of the oversight programme is to identify and assess operational or technical obstacles that could delay project completion. This hands-on approach enables the Department to implement immediate corrective measures to ensure that projects remain on schedule and within budget.

The MEC highlighted several significant challenges frequently encountered by the Department, which continue to affect the delivery of road infrastructure projects across Gauteng. These challenges place immense pressure on the province’s ability to expand and modernise its road network in line with growing population and economic demands.

“Road infrastructure development remains a major challenge for us in Gauteng due to a variety of issues, including encroachments, community disruptions, project stoppages, and contractor performance. This is why we continuously assess our projects to ensure they are completed on time,” explained the MEC.

“These oversight visits are essential to ensuring that our road infrastructure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and according to the highest engineering and safety standards. We are taking a proactive approach to identifying challenges early and implementing immediate solutions to keep these strategic projects on track,” the MEC stated

By assessing construction progress against established timelines and ensuring compliance with the Department’s engineering and safety standards, government demonstrates its commitment to responsible governance and reassures the public that infrastructure investments are being actively monitored. This approach enables immediate corrective interventions and fast-tracks developments that improve mobility and unlock socio-economic opportunities for Gauteng residents.

The Department remains firmly focused on enhancing mobility and accessibility throughout Gauteng. Through continued investment in smart transport infrastructure, government is ensuring inclusive participation in the province’s economic future.

“Smart transport infrastructure is central to our vision of a modern, connected, and inclusive Gauteng. These projects will not only improve accessibility but also unlock socio-economic opportunities for businesses, workers, and communities,” said the MEC.

These site visits reinforce the Department’s unwavering commitment to advancing the #GrowingGautengTogether vision through Smart Mobility.

“As government, we have a responsibility to ensure that every rand invested in infrastructure delivers tangible benefits to our residents. Through these inspections, we are reinforcing accountability, transparency, and quality service delivery,” concluded the MEC.
