Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Jacob Mamabolo has assured residents of Pangoville in the West Rand that their pleas and requests will not fall on deaf ears.
This is after the MEC, accompanied by community leadership, visited the area yesterday to see the conditions the residents are living under and to see how government can improve their situation.
The residents had earlier complained about lack of toilets, electricity, running water and houses. The residents also want their informal settlement to be formalised while they wait for houses.
MEC Mamabolo said that he was going to check the list of beneficiaries in the area and see who qualifies and what form of help government will give to those who do not.
“I have seen that the informal settlement is in a flood line. The department will do studies to check if construction can be done in some parts parallel to it,” he said.
The MEC also said that government has a programme to upgrade informal settlements and will look if Pangoville can be formalised so that the residents can receive some services.
“How the area is used will depend on studies done,” MEC Mamabolo told the community leaders.
Mamabolo also warned the leaders not to be side-tracked by politics and the upcoming local government elections in their quest for better services.
The MEC said he will return to the community within a month to give feedback and discuss a way forward with the residents.
